Enjoy the city life during your stay! The climate in Malaga is Mediterranean subtropical which means that it rarely experiences cold weather. In winter, in fact, the Malaga Mountains block the cold winds from the north ensuring a mild weather and an average temperature hovering between 17°C and 18°C from December until February. Summer on the other hand is quite long - generally from late April to early November - and it can be quite hot. August is the warmest month and it may reach peaks of 35°C. What is good about the weather in Malaga is the little rainfall. The city in fact experiences, on average, about 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, making it the perfect spot for your holidays.
It's not only the weather that makes Malaga a great place to visit, however. The city hosts quite a few events throughout the year, all well-worth participating in.
- Procession of the Three Holy Kings (early January), a succession of carnivals and parades lasting two days which provides entertainment to both children and adults.
- Fiestas de Carnaval (February). Taking place right before Lent, the festival features people dressed in traditional costumes, flamenco dancing, parades, music, a large fair with stalls selling handmade objects, and contests.
- Semana Santa (March/April. Dates vary according to Easter). It might seem strange to add the Holy Week among festivities but that is because the one in Malaga sets itself apart. Instead of silence and meditation in fact, the city celebrates this religious occurrence with processions, singing, and dancing.
- Feria del Libro (June). If you're a book lover, then don't miss Malaga's book fair where you can purchase anything from second-hand books to first editions to signed copies.
- Eve of San Juan (late June). Musical performances enliven this festival as well as firework displays and various bonfires along the beach. Also, the legend says that if you wash in the sea during the night of San Juan, the evil spirits will be washed away and you will be granted eternal beauty by the good spirits.
- Virgen del Carmen (mid-July), a festival to honor the patron saint of the sea and of seamen, with a procession of boats following the statue out of the harbor.
- Feria de Malaga (mid-August). Starting off as a celebration for the merger of Malaga into the Castilian Crown, the festival features firework displays to the sound of classical music, people dressed in typical costumes, traditional dancing, and food stalls.
- Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales (late December). A celebration of Spain's equivalent of April's Fool, the event includes competitions, traditional food, music, and dancing.
As we mentioned before, Malaga is simply full of things to see. If you don't have much time, then the best idea for you is to simply walk around, get lost among its winding streets, and discover your own version of the city. What is special in Malaga, after all, is the atmosphere that nearly 3000 years of history have granted it, and that's what you need to soak up to make your trip truly unforgettable. If, however, you want to visit something more specific, then you might want to start with the Alcazaba. Built by the Moors in the 11th century and located on the top of a hill right in the centre of Malaga, this fort is the best preserved of its kind in the whole of the country. Climb to the ramparts and enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings, or visit the small museum inside it which holds artifacts that were found during digs at the site. While you're there you might also want to visit the Roman Theatre located just below it: this too you can explore freely on foot. If you enjoy castles and fortresses then consider going on a hike (or hopping on a bus) and visiting the Castillo de Gibralfaro. Still a Moorish construction, this too affords beautiful views from its ramparts as well as an exhibit on the various armies that occupied it in the past.
If you are more interested in art, however, then don't miss the Picasso Museum, entirely dedicated to the local painter, or the Museo Casa Natal de Picasso where the painter was born and where you will see paintings he created during his childhood as well as objects from his life. If you're into modern art then you might want to stop to the Museo Carmen Thyssen as well, which features a great collection of Spanish paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, or the contemporary works of art and installations you can find at the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo. And when you're tired of museums, take a stroll along the La Concepción Botanical & Historical Garden and enjoy the sunshine.
