Pick the hotel you like best and explore the destination!Although Mark Twain's popular quote goes, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco", the city actually has a Mediterranean climate, which means that winter (November to March) is mild although prone to rain and fog, while summer (June to September) is dry and quite sunny. Thanks to the proximity of the ocean, the weather is quite consistent and there rarely are serious temperature swings between one season and the next. San Francisco is in fact the place that has the coolest summer temperatures of all the USA's major cities in the months of June, July, and August as it is often windy and a layer of fog often appears in the morning.
San Francisco, however, is not a popular tourist destination only due to its mild and pleasant climate - events play a big part too! Some of the most popular are:
- The Chinese New Year Festival and Parade (late February). Listed among the IFEA's top tem parades in the world, this event is easily the largest celebration of Asian culture outside of Asia with a parade featuring hundreds of floats and costumes as well as music and fireworks.
- The St. Patrick's Day Parade (March 17th), with thousands of people gathering to celebrate the Irish patron saint and the Emerald Isle's way of life.
- The San Francisco Flower and Garden Show (late March). Probably the largest festival of its kind in the western area of the USA, the event features seminars by top garden experts, book launches and signing, and a large market area.
- The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival (mid-April). Thousands of people gather in the city to celebrate both Japanese and Japanese-American culture with food stalls, parades, and the Cherry Blossom Queen Pageant.
- The International Lao New Year Festival (mid-April). Held over three days, the event celebrates all aspects of Lao, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Burmese culture and it features authentic ethnic food, craft stalls, live music and dancing, and lots of family activities.
- The Union Street and North Beach Festivals (June). The former held at the beginning of the month while the later is held later, these two events are among the largest in San Francisco and showcase hundreds of artists, food stalls, and entertainers.
- The San Francisco Gay Pride (late June), one of the largest, most popular, and most colorful celebrations of this kind.
- The Fillmore Street Jazz Festival (Independence Day weekend), an absolute must-see for jazz lovers all over the world.
- The San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival (mid-September). Featuring over a hundred boats, this is easily the largest competition of the kind in the whole of the United States.
- The San Francisco Literary Festival (early October). Affectionately known as Litquake, this festival is the ideal destination for booklovers with its 150 events, discussions, readings and book launches.
- The Great Dickens Christmas Fair (mid-November to Christmas). Featuring hundreds of costumed actor, this festival recreates Victorian London right in the middle of San Francisco and provides a feel of what Christmas was like at the time.
But if you don't happen to be in town during a festival, what is there to see? In the unlikely event there is nothing going on during your holiday, San Francisco still provides many attractions and landmarks to make your holiday a good one.
If you want to simply gaze at some of San Francisco's most notable landmarks then one you cannot skip is definitely the Golden Gate Bridge, located over the Golden Gate Strait connecting the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay. And while you're there, factor in even a visit to the incredible Golden Gate Park. Boasting over 1,000 acres of land, this park is not only an ideal location for picnics under the sun but it also features many attractions such as the Conservatory of Flowers with its 2,000 species of flora, the Steinhart Aquarium for lovers of marine animals, and the popular Japanese Tea Garden which was built in 1894 for the World Fair.
If you enjoy nature then a great place to stop is also the Muir Woods National Monument. Located just a half-hour drive from the city, this park features the iconic 300-foot-tall Redwood Trees and its beaches give visitors the opportunity to relax and enjoy a dip in the ocean after the tour.
On the other hand, if you are more of a city person, then one of the most popular neighborhoods of San Francisco is Fisherman's Wharf, right on the ocean. There you will find attractions such as the Pier 39 shopping centre (which also allows a splendid view of the seals in the ocean below), the Ripley's "Believe It Or Not!" Museum, and the Musee Mecanique, extremely popular with adults and children alike as it boasts a collection of hundreds of coin-operated games. Located not far from the Golden Gate Bridge, this is where you have to go if you want a delicious seafood-based meal.
While you're strolling around Fisherman's Wharf, however, consider taking a ferry to the small, rocky island where Alcatraz Penitentiary is located. Formerly a prison, this site has now been turned into a museum which will tell you how guards and prisoners alike lived there.
Another great place to visit especially if you are travelling with children and the weather turns bad is the Exploratorium. With over 500 exhibits on topics ranging from the human body to outer space, this museum provides a hands-on experience your kids (or you) won't easily forget.
